Garage Cabinet
Construction
The type of Garage Cabinet
Construction and materials you select allow you
to adapt your garage
storage space to your needs. Custom Garage
Cabinets can be designed to meet your special needs and make
the best use of available Garage Storage Space.
Your choice of Finish or stains will depend on the type of
material your cabinet system is constructed from.
Materials like wood and many laminates can be easily painted
or stained, but materials like metals and plastics usually have
a restricted color selection.
The exteriors of garage cabinets are typically fused with an
attractive and durable laminate surface available in colors,
wood tones, or metal finishes.
The interior on inferior cabinets is often left unfinished,
and the raw wood will absorb and permanently stain with
greases, solvents, and oils typically found in the garage.
Cabinet Materials
Garage Cabinets are constructed from a variety of materials.
They include plastics (Resins), fibers, wood, core materials
like particle board and medium density fiberboard (MDF),
Plywood, steel and wire.
The amount of material and strength depend on design,
features and support methods used. One of the most popular
shelves are the ones with a Melamine finish. They are easy to
maintain and look great.
Cabinet Durability
The durability of cabinet depends on the materials the
shelves, their supports and fasteners are constructed from.
Another major factor, is the condition of your garage. If
the walls, studs or other supports are inadequate or in poor
condition, you could have a dangerous situation.

Cabinet Strength
The strength of cabinet depends on construction materials,
cabinet supports or hangers and the span between supports or
fasteners.
For light smaller loads, plastics or wire are fine. For
larger heavier items, you will need wood or metal cabinets.
Cabinet Capacity
Garage Cabinet Construction you choose can
determine their load capacity. The amount of weight they
can safely supported on them.
Load capacity ranges from light weight for storing such
things as sports gear, Christmas tree stands and decorations to
heavy-duty cabinet systems that are capable of storing car
accessories, car parts and large heavier tools.
Play it Safe. Determine the approximate weight of what you
plan to store, then select the cabinet system that has capacity
to handle approximately 25% more weight.
If you have completed the Take Inventory
Worksheet, you simply add up the weight of
items you want to store.
The Take Inventory Worksheet is a convenient tool that makes
it easier to select the correct Garage Cabinet
Construction method best suited to your needs..
Cabinet Stability
As a precaution against tipping, some types of Cabinets,
especially tall ones with heavy loads, may require attachment
to the wall or other supports.
A simple way to check for stability, is to stand next to the
loaded cabinet system and ask your self
"What would happen if a child
climbed on the cabinet system".
If the answer to that question causes you to move, remove
items from the cabinet unit until it is safe, or create
additional stability by attaching it to something stable.
Cabinet Flexibility
An important consideration in choosing the Garage
Cabinets Construction method is flexibility. Look for shelves
that can be adjusted or relocated to a few different locations
within the Cabinet System.
Even though many cabinets are light enough to be easily
moved, the frames or supports often do not allow for
adjustments.
The better Garage
Cabinets allow adjustment of most shelves.
Make sure the supports that allow for the adjustments are
secure and that they have some way to prevent them from being
accidentally dislodged.
Cabinet Safety
Before placing any items on cabinets, make sure the
cabinets, base unit, supports and fasteners are strong and
secure enough to safely support the combined weight of what you
will be placing in or on them.
