Completing this Garage Condition Checklist is one of the first steps to Organizing your Garage Storage Space into a safe and secure organized environment.

It is one of the most important steps in our Holistic Approach to having A Place For Everything - Everything In It's Place

The checklist will help identify your garage condition, but first we need to arrive at how you are using it now and how you plan to us it in the future.

Garage Use

The garage is often one of the largest and most frequently used rooms in the average American home. However, few homeowners Plan Garage Organization
for current or future uses.

Current Garage Use

The first step in determining the condition of your garage is to determine how it is currently being used. Is it completely finished, ready to be organized with Organizing Containers and Garage Organizers, or is it a mismatch of shelves, cabinets, racks and stands.

Take A Sheet Of Paper And Jot Down A Few Notes On:

* The daily events that take place in the garage now.

* What is stored in your garage now?

* The type of storage shelves, cabinets or containers being used now and are they being fully utilized?

* What is cluttered or stored on the garage floor

* What is hanging from the ceiling or walls that could create an Accident?

* How many days have you parked your car(s) in the garage in the past week, month.

When finished, do the same thing with Planned Garage Use.

How do you plan on using the garage? Is it for parking all your cars, storage of tools, sports equipment etc., or for .... ? ?

What is the vision of your Ultimate Garage?

Take A Sheet Of Paper And Jot Down A Few Notes On:

* How many cars and how often do I need to park in the garage

* What other types of items do I want to store in the garage?

* Are all the items considered Safe Garage Storage Items?

* How can the garage be best utilized for my family and stuff?

When you have finished the above exercise, print out this checklist and wander around the garage and fill it out.

Concrete Garage Floors

QUESTION:-->
Are there any major cracks in the concrete garage floor?

YES ___ NO ___

RESPONSE:--->
Major cracks in the concrete floor of a garage are signs of subsurface settling or lifting. Depending on the age of the house and soil conditions, this could be a major or minor problem and should be repaired before doing any other garage improvements.

SOLUTIONS:-->
If the crack has been the same size for a year or more, filling it should be adequate. If the crack is new and is growing, or increases or decreases with the seasons, you should have a qualified professional give you a opinion and estimate to have the problem solved.

Are there any stains that are imbedded in the surface of the garages concrete floor?

Garage Walls

Are all the interior garage walls finished with sheet rock, wall panels or plywood?

Garage Ceiling

QUESTION:--> Do you know what the ceiling truss, joist or rafter spacing is?

Knowing the ceiling truss, joist or rafter spacing and size is a critical factor in the type of Overhead Organizing System you choose. If a system is designed for 16" spacing and the ceiling spacing is 24", it could be very difficult to fasten the Overhead Organizers in a manner that will safely support the items you intend to store and to meet the manufacturer's specifications.

Knowing the ceiling spacing, size, span and load capacity of the truss, joist or rafter is also an important part of creating a Garage Organizing Plan. A 2x6 truss will normally support more than a 2x4 truss, depending on the span and grade of lumber.

Buy A Garage Wall Stud Finder to locate the ceiling spacing, then place a mark or masking tape on the ceiling at each truss, joist or rafter location.

Check the load capacity of the ceiling truss, joist or rafter with the manufacturer or your local building official.

Garage Electrical

Does the electrical system have room for expansion?

If you are planning on garage improvements, lighting, heating and additional plugs for tools etc. are important considerations. If your garage electrical system has capacity for expansion, you or an electrician could simply add another circuit and breaker at minimal cost.

SOLUTIONS:-->
If you are on a tight budget, plan for electrical improvements that won't overload your existing electrical system. If your Garage Electrical System has room for expansion, have a qualified electrician plan and install the electrical expansion.

Garage Heating And Cooling

A large percentage of homes use a forced air heating system with the furnace located in the garage, basement or a furnace closet within your home.

Can you garage be heated or cooled using your existing heating and cooling systems?
