As you identify each item, ask yourself the questions under the appropriate heading and enter the answer on the Take Inventory Worksheet. Take your time, this is a critical part of safely squeezing more into your garage storage space.

There are 18 Main Headings And Questions On The Garage Organizer Take Inventory Worksheet -

1/ The Description of each item. describe briefly what it is. (e.g. camping tent, golf shoes, ice skate, tools, lawn seed)

2/ The Quantity of each item. How many of this item are there? How many do I/We need to keep?

3/ The Group each item fits into. Which group does this item fit into. Is there more than one group it could fit into. Which group best identifies this item.

4/ The Category each item fits into. Which category does this item fit into. Is there more than one category it could fit into. Which category best identifies this item.

5/ The Safety of each item. How safe is the item. (e.g. could it be dangerous if used the wrong way or if someone was to fall on it) Choices are Safe for everyone, Potentially dangerous, dangerous.

6/ The Construction Material of each item. What is it constructed from? Wood, plastics, metal, fabrics, gas, liquid, glass.

7/ The Physical State of each item. Is the item a gas, liquid or a solid? Is it flexible or stiff? Can it be easily broken. Choices are solid, liquid, gas, flexible, breakable, fragile.

8/ The Bought In Type of each item. What type of container was the item purchased or obtained in. (e.g. box, bag, reel cart, nothing). Choices are one of the types of containers or non

9/ The Support of each item. To store the item, will the item hang, stand or be placed in something or, placed on something?

10/ The Sensitivity of each item. What is the item sensitive to? water, moisture, heat, flame, air, dust, spillage or is it durable.

11/ The Portability of each item. How is it handled or transported? In a container, on a cart, carried?

12/ The Use Type of each item. How many times will this item been used in the next week, month or year. How often is this item used? Frequently, Seasonal, Never Used. Your answer will place the item into frequent or regular use, occasional or seasonal use, seldom used or never used groups.

13/ The Use Skill of each item. Who uses this item? anyone, adults, children, professional

14/ The Best Storage Method for each item

  • Stand It in on or in something
  • Fold It and place it on or in something
  • Hang It from something
  • Pour It from or into something

15/ The Best Storage Place for each item. Is it best stored on the floor, walls, ceiling or extra storage?

16/ The Best Storage System for each item. What is the best type of storage system for this item or the container it will be stored in? Floor, Wall or Ceiling or Specialty?

17/ The Size in Cubic Inches of each item. How much storage space does this item consume? To find out, measure the length, height and width of the item in inches. Multiplying the length by width by height gives cubic inches of storage space the item consumes. The approximate dimensions are fine.

18/ The Weight in Ounces of each item. How much does this item weigh? For consistency, weigh all items in ounces. Remember to add all items and converted to pounds.
