To get you off to a fast start, you should:
1/ Requested the free Take Inventory Worksheet or
Purchas Home Inventory Software
2/ Have your Inventory Organizing Aids
in place
3/ Commit enough time to finish the
Identification and
Elimination task
Identification
As you identify each item on the Take Inventory
Form, place it:
* With Other Similar Items To Be Stored
* In The Repair Container
* In The Give Away Container
* In The Garage Sale Container
* In The Garbage Container
Elimination
As you handle each item, ask yourself the
questions below, then place it in a group, category or one of
the storage containers. Has the item been worn or used in the
last 2 years? If not, dispose of it. Can we do without it? Yes,
No Are we keeping it because of sentimental reasons? Yes, No If
the item is a keeper, but needs repairs, place it in the repair
container. Be careful. Don't keep items you tell yourself that
"I may need it one day", because you probably won't.
There are 4 Basic
Ways To Dispose Of Items
1/ Have a yard or
garage sale. You will be surprised at price
some of your items will bring. The saying one persons trash is
another's treasure might work for you
2/ Donate to a charitable
organization. There are several that will pick up items from
your home. It is even possible to get a tax benefit for donated
items.
3/ Give
away free to friends or needy. Better than
paying dump fees.
4/ Garbage
Dump should be last resort. You could have to
pay a dump fee, but that's probably less than the cost of
storing. In any event, the peace of mind should be worth the
cost.
Identifying each item and determining what to
keep, what needs repairs, what to give away, what to sell, and
what goes to garbage can be time consuming. However, the
results should be worth it.
